Advantages and Disadvantages of Water-Based Polyurethane Adhesives

Water-based polyurethane adhesives use water as the dispersion medium, being environmentally friendly and safe. They are the mainstream alternative product to solvent-based polyurethane adhesives.

 

The advantages are prominent: environmentally friendly and low toxicity, without or with very little organic solvents, low VOC emissions, no risk of flammability or explosion, safer production and construction.friendly to construction, can be directly diluted with water and cleaned equipment, simple operation.strong adhesion, good adhesion to metals, plastics, wood, fabrics, leather and other materials, good toughness of the adhesive layer, resistance to impact and bending; adjustable performance, through formulation design, different states from soft elasticity to rigidity can be achieved, excellent low-temperature performance, stable bonding strength at room temperature; widely applied, suitable for packaging, footwear manufacturing, furniture, automotive interiors and other fields, meeting green production requirements.

 

The disadvantages are also obvious: slower curing speed, water evaporation depends on temperature and ventilation, efficiency is lower than solvent-based; water resistance needs to be improved, residual hydrophilic groups in the adhesive layer easily lead to poor water resistance and heat resistance; high-temperature resistance is average, long-term use temperature is mostly below 100℃; low solid content, the same coating amount has less effective components, and storage is sensitive to temperature, prone to freezing and deterioration, the cost is usually higher than traditional adhesives.
